According to the National Fire Protection Association, 5 deaths were attributed to lighting in Illinois from 2003 to 2012 with an average of 808,047 cloud-to-ground lightning flashes per year, placing Illinois as the 10th highest state in terms of lightning strikes per year.

The Association goes on to report that from 2007 to 2011, an annual average of 22,600 fires and 62 civilian death and injuries were reported nationwide with losses of $451,000,000 nationally. All of these fires, deaths and injuries and losses were directly attributed to lightning strikes!

    A neighbor witnessed a lightning strike to a home in Darien, Illinois. The lightning blew a big hole in the roof and sparked a fire in the attic and second story bedroom. The homeowner and his dog were able to escape to safety.

    Lightning struck a home in Wheaton, Illinois and sparked a fire that led to injuries to three firefighters.The fire started in the attic of the home and the occupants were alerted to the fire by neighbors. Neighbors report that it is the fourth lightning strike in 20 years among the few houses on the highest point on the road.

    A two story apartment complex in Granite City, Illinois was a complete loss after a lightning strike and subsequent fire. Smoke quickly began to billow and the attic filled with smoke. No one was injured.

    Firefighters responded to a call in Peoria, Illinois for a house fire caused by a lightning strike. Flames were coming from a second story window and roof area of the wooden structure. Damages were estimated at $10,000.
